The Ledger Nano S is an intriguing little "Hard Wallet". It's a USB stick size hard ware device that is capable of performing multiple task including being a secure Bitcoin and Altcoin wallet, as well as a hardware authenticator for the universal second factor authentication standard.
Why would you ever need a hard wallet?
Cryptocurrencies are completely different from traditional currencies. With our current monetary system YOU are the most important factor in the equation. At first glance the Nano Ledger S looks like an ordinary flash-drive but once you swing open the metal cover you see there is a mini screen, two buttons on top, and a micro USB port at the end. The interface was designed to be simple and user friendly. You use the left and right buttons to scroll through options and you press both buttons simultaneously to make selections.

The Set Up
The setup is really simple. First you take your micro USB cable which comes included in the package and connect to your computer , you will see the logo pop up on the screen. The nano will ask you to select/enter a pin. Make sure to remember this pin, if you input the incorrect pin 3 times the Nano ledger s automatically resets.
After you set your pin the nano will give you 24 different words to write down on a card provided in the package. These are your recovery words, keep this in a safe secure place. You can use your recovery words to restore or generate your keys if you ever lose your ledger nano s wallet. After you've written down your 24 recovery words the nano will ask you a few of these words at random to make sure you have the right words in the right order.
Now the device is ready to be used.
Visit www.ledgerwallet.com and click on the Apps tab then scroll down to the applications.
Ledger Applications
Ledger has its own bitcoin wallet application that works in google chrome web browser. Pros, is a very easy and polished user experience. Cons, its only available as a google chrome extension .
Once you load up the application you will need to connect and enter your pin on the nano s to view the wallet . The rest is just like a regular crypto wallet, except with the Ledger to send you first have to confirm through the device. Which adds another level of physical security.
The best thing about the Nano Ledger S is that your private keys and sensitive data never leaves the nano itself. In theory, it doesn't matter if the computer you are using is riddled with crypto stealing viruses or compromised in any way, your private keys will still remain secure. This means that you are able to plug it in to any computer that is running the google chrome browser and you have secure access to your cryptocurrency wallets.
Ledger also has an Ethereum wallet app available which acts the same as the Bitcoin wallet app but you can also use your Ledger to connect and keep your www.myetherwallet.Com private keys safe.
For altcoins, Ledger offers the Ledger manager app. this app allows you to get access to the altcoins Ledger currently supports. The Ledger can only fit up to 4-5 wallets at a time on the actual device, if you do not want to be bothered with this limitation, then the nano ledger blue might be for you. The application allows you to move wallets in and out of your Ledger. Your data and cryptocurrencies remain safe in the Ledger manager application.
Ledger also offers the ledger authentication application that allows you to validate transactions on your smart phone.
